According to a June 2003 interview in Guitarist Magazine, all the acoustic guitars used on the By the Way album were Taylors, borrowed from producer Rick Rubin. Rubin reportedly encouraged John to use Taylors instead of Martins, even though John himself preferred Martins.

The only Taylor model John was seen playing was a 314ce, which he occasionally used at the beginning of the By the Way tour. One notable instance was during his performance on The Jonathan Ross Show on May 31, 2002.
