John purchased this Martin 0-15 guitar from Norman’s Rare Guitars in the early 2000s as a backup for his main 0-15, a guitar he borrowed from Rick Rubin after rejoining the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Shortly after acquiring it, the second 0-15 was fitted with a pickup system and became John’s main live acoustic guitar.
I just bought another one that I’m having some sort of system put in it so I can play acoustic shows – it’s this “state-of-the-art” pickup system that there is now for acoustics. It’s a microphone; it’s not really a pickup.

One of those actually belonged to Rick Rubin. Not Anthony. The other one we bought from Norm’s Rare Guitars.

This guitar was also featured in a 2022 Guitar Player magazine article, which includes some incredible close-up photos of it—Get a Close Look at John Frusciante’s Iconic Martin 00-15. From the photos, it’s clear that the original tuners were replaced at some point with Waverlys. The bridge also appears to be a replacement, as the mahogany is noticeably lighter in color compared to the rest of the body.
According to an interview that Dave Lee, John’s guitar tech, did with JFEffects.com, the pickup system used in the Martin was the Trance Audio “Amulet” Stereo. This same pickup was installed in John’s first Martin 0-15 at some point.
