John Frusciante’s MXR Phase 100

John used a MXR Phase 100 pedal at the end of the song “Parallel Universe” from the 1999 album Californication. If you listen to the studio version, the effect becomes prominent around the 3:20 mark.

I borrowed an MXR Phase 100 from the people who were recording next door. I was looking for a way to approach that solo, and the Phase 100 worked out well.

However, during the Californication tour, John switched to an MXR Phase 90, suggesting he chose to purchase the simpler pedal for himself after the sessions. The Phase 100 offers more tonal flexibility with its intensity switch, allowing for a broader range of effects, but the Phase 90’s straightforward design and classic sound likely suited John’s needs for live performances, where extra options probably weren’t necessary.
