John Mayer’s 2015 PRS Super Eagle (Number 1)

This guitar is the one that John eventually settled up with after trying out the first prototype from Paul Reed Smith. The guitar is identical to at least two other PRSs that John has, aside from the sticker on the back that simply reads “1”, and the pattern in the wood on the top (which is very hard to see sometimes).

All three of John’s PRS Super Eagles. You can see some differences in the wood pattern if you look very closely. Aside from that, the guitars appear to be identical.

Specs

The guitar features a curly maple sandwich body with mahogany sides, a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard with 24 and 25.375″ – which is longer than usual for PRS guitars, but still short in comparison to John’s Strats (25.5″). The model is equipped with two specially-wound 58/15 JM treble and bass (bridge and neck) pickups, and a custom-wound Narrowfield JM pickup in the middle position (with three individual coil-tap mini-switches).

The guitar also has a built-in JCF Audio preamp with treble boost, PRS Gen III Tremolo bridge, and a hand-signed sticker in the f-hole of the guitar that was designed by Mayer’s friend David Smith (who also designed the cover art for Mayer’s 2012 Born and Raised album).

Usage

It’s very hard to tell for sure which Super Eagle John is using on a particular gig, due to reasons already explained. In the footage from 2016 to 2017 on the gigs with Dead & Company, he seems to be using #1 most of the time, as one can clearly see the dark grain line above the middle pickup (see grain comparison image above for reference).

It’s very hard to say anything for sure though, as wood looks very different depending on the angle that you look from, the light hitting it, etc.

John has two nearly identical hollow body Super Eagles. The number 1 has a slightly thicker black stripe just above the middle pick up. It has a number 1 on the back. This is his main Dead and Co Super Eagle. He showed it during that backstage Instagram in 2017 where talked about the Black1s neck. I watch every Dead and Co show and have come to realize the difference between the two.

He then had the solid body version that came about in 2017. It has the f hole sticker.
