Jimmy Page’s Rickenbacker Transonic

Jimmy Page used these amps during Led Zeppelin’s first American tour. Reportedly, he wasn’t particularly fond of them and ended up leaving most of the gear behind in the U.S. after the tour concluded.

There’s a persistent rumor that he used a Rickenbacker Transonic to record Heartbreaker, but according to Page himself [1], the track was recorded using a Les Paul and Marshall stack combination.

One thing often overlooked about these cabinets is that they are not just stock speaker cabinets as one would assume. Jimmy page had two different models he employed, one set were 4×12″ speakers, the other was 3×10″ speakers with two horns loaded into the top. You can see these horns in various live shots through the grill cloth and also in the studio for Led Zeppelin Two sessions. His obsession with treble probably led him to using these cabinets in early days.
