Tim Henson’s Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci BFR 6

Tim was seen playing this guitar in a few of his earlier YouTube videos (screenshots below). Most of them are dating to around 2015 it seems.

Based on the looks, the guitar is an Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci model. Based on the fact that it has some unique features, like the figured maple top, gold hardware, and a headstock finished in clear lacquer, this was likely a BFR or “Ball Family Reserve” guitar. These are basically custom guitars based on existing models, but featuring these unique features.

Specs

The guitar features, as already noted, a quilt maple top on what’s either mahogany, alder, or maple body, and a matching quilt maple headstock. As far as hardware, the guitar is equipped with Schaller M6-IND locking tuners with pearl buttons, Custom John Petrucci Music Man Piezo floating tremolo, a DiMarzio LiquiFire pickup in the neck, and a DiMarzio Crunch Lab in the bridge.

Another Ernie Ball or the Same One?

In Polyphonia’s video for the song “87”, Tim can be seen playing almost an identical-looking guitar, except all the hardware pieces are chrome instead of gold.

Based on how similar these guitars look, especially if you look at the quilted maple top and headstock, it sounds possible that this is actually one exact same guitar but with the hardware replaced. Although this is quite a lot of work to replace every single chrome piece on the guitar, based on how adamant Tim is nowadays on all of his guitars having gold hardware, it doesn’t sound far-fetched that he would do this one of his older guitars.
