This is how SRV’s “Pride and Joy” Sounds on a Cheap Toy Guitar from Walmart

Lots of unusual stuff can be seen in the late hours at Walmart stores all over the US, but more often than not, they make you lose all hope in humanity and make you question whether your own existence on this planet is worth it or whether something like Mars, where there’s definitely fewer weirdos, ought to do it.

To prove that there’s still some hope for humanity as a whole, and rock and roll music, here is something that will definitely make you smile. Clay Shelburn & Zac Stokes (Clay on the guitar, and Zac singing the second part of the song) made an impromptu cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Pride and Joy’ in Walmart on the guitar that most of us would likely disregard as unplayable and complete and utter garbage.

What surprises the most is the fact that the guitar actually stayed in tune the whole time. You’d expect that a guitar that was made for the sole purpose of being beaten up by a 4-year-old would have trouble keeping up with all the bends, but somehow the guy makes it work. The guitar in question seems to be one of those First Act toy guitars, which actually have somewhat decent tuners, although the body, in particular, feels like it is made from cardboard.

So in case you’re sitting with a cheap Sigma copy on your lap thinking that a proper Martin D-18 would make you sound a hundred times better, it’s time for a reality check.

As it turns out, unsurprisingly, the guy playing the toy guitar in the video is actually a really good guitarist and someone who dedicates a lot of time and effort to music. According to his bio on Reverbnation, Clay Shelburn has performed on stage since the age of 13, wrote his first song at 12, and currently works on promoting and touring his first full-length album, “Defined” (released October 2015).

What is also very cool is that after the above video gained attention via various websites, Clay decided to record the same cover using a proper acoustic guitar. After watching this second cover it becomes obvious that this isn’t just your average guitarist (on average a proper term to use would probably be a guitar owner since to actually qualify for such a title, one would be required to know more than just a few chords – if that) but a really talented and well-practiced player.
