Mike Campbell’s 1960s Gibson Les Paul SG Junior

Mike got this guitar while he was in Hartford, Connecticut on tour, and he went to a video store, that randomly happened to have a couple of guitars for sale. He bought them both, one of them being this SG Junior [1]

This most likely happened in 1986, because based on various wiki sources [2], Tom Petty had a concert in Hartford, Connecticut on July 11, 1986, which was during the 1986 True Confessions Tour, which was a concert tour by Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

The guitar was also damaged during that same tour, at The Forum in Los Angeles on August 3, 1986, when Campbell dropped it and it snapped the headstock off.

Later on the guitar was fixed, and Mike went to record the solo on “Runnin’ Down a Dream” with it, and he also used the guitar on May 20, 1989, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed “Runnin’ Down a Dream” on the Season 14 finale of Saturday Night Live.

In the photo below, Bob Dylan can be seen playing the same guitar with Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. That appearance was during Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ March 1, 1990 concert at The Forum in Inglewood, California, where they were joined by both Dylan and Springsteen.

Campbell has also discussed the guitar in a Gibson TV video with Mark Agnesi. [1]
