James Hetfield used a ProCo Rat distortion pedal on Metallica’s debut album, Kill ‘Em All, released in 1983. The pedal was paired with a modified Marshall 1959 SLP amplifier and a Marshall 1960B 4×12 speaker cabinet loaded with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.

While this information is widely circulated online and accepted as fact, if you ever come across any direct interviews where James explicitly mentions using the ProCo Rat, please feel free to drop it in the comments. It would be nice to have some confirmation from the man himself.
