James Hetfield’s Mesa Boogie Mark IV

For the Black Album, James used a combination of a modified Marshall amplifier, his trusty Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+, the newer Mesa Boogie Mark IV, along with a Strategy 400 power amp and an ADA MP-1 preamp.

To eliminate unwanted frequencies, James enclosed his Marshall cabinets with foam and blankets during the recording sessions. Afterward, the band’s equipment manager, Zack Harmon, designed custom speaker “coffins” for James to use in the future, providing the same sound isolation in a much more practical way.
