James Hetfield’s Martin D-28

James Hetfield played a vintage Martin D-28 acoustic guitar for the studio recording of “Mama Said” and also used it during several live performances. Notably, he brought out this guitar at the Bridge School Benefit concert and during the acoustic set on the “Poor Re-Touring Me” tour in 1998.

During that period, Metallica was experimenting with all kinds of ideas, including the bold move to include a short acoustic set in their live shows. Despite bassist Jason Newsted’s attempts to steer the band away from this concept, the idea ultimately made its way to the stage.

In 2014, James Hetfield was seen playing the same model of vintage Martin D-28 acoustic guitar, this time equipped with an LR Baggs M80 pickup. While it’s possible that this is the very same guitar he used during the ’90s, it’s probably unlikely given the changes in his gear over the years.
