James Hetfield was spotted using an ESP LTD H-307 7-string guitar while recording “Some Kind of Monster” from the 2003 album St. Anger. For that track, he tuned the guitar to CCGCFAD.
The H-307 featured a see-thru black cherry finish on a figured maple top attached to a mahogany body. Its neck was also mahogany, with a rosewood fretboard and a 25.5″ scale. The guitar was fitted with EMG HZ-707 passive pickups and a Tune-o-matic bridge.
Interestingly, during the rehearsals—which were filmed and included in the official video for “Some Kind of Monster”—James was seen playing an ESP LTD MF-207 instead.
