This custom-built ESP Eclipse for James Hetfield featured the typical specs you’d expect from his guitars—a mahogany body and neck, a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets, iron cross inlays, and EMG 81/85 pickups.
What made this guitar stand out was the custom paintwork created by tattoo artist Dennis McPhail, with unique artwork displayed on the headstock, front, and back of the body. Despite its striking design, James only occasionally used this guitar during the 2004 to 2006 period.
The Nickname
If you’re not familiar with “Kustom Kulture,” it’s a subculture centered around people who are passionate about customizing cars and motorcycles. It all began in California during the 1950s and 1960s when folks started modifying their vehicles to make them stand out. But it’s not just about the cars and bikes; it also embraces a unique style of art, fashion, music, and even hairstyles that go hand in hand with that lifestyle.
Picture a blend of classic car enthusiasts, tattoo artists, and rock ‘n’ roll fans, all united by their love for creating something different and personal. Given that James fits right into this world, it’s no surprise that he would be drawn to a guitar that matches this style.
