This guitar was one of James Hetfield’s main instruments during the St. Anger and Death Magnetic eras, used extensively both in the studio and on tour.
According to some sources (originally found on montyjay.com, now offline), the guitar was initially a 1976 Gibson Explorer that James’ guitar tech purchased and then meticulously restored. The restoration process involved completely gutting the old electronics, repainting the guitar, and re-fretting the neck. The rusted pickguard, from which the guitar got its name, was reportedly crafted by James himself.
The remaining specs, like the EMG 81/60 pickups and Tune-o-Matic bridge, were consistent with those on Hetfield’s earlier guitars, ensuring it maintained his signature sound.
