PRS Guitars
Paul Reed Smith Guitars (PRS), founded in 1985 by Paul Reed Smith in Annapolis, Maryland, is an American manufacturer of electric and acoustic guitars, basses, and amplifiers, now based in Stevensville, Maryland. The company quickly gained recognition with its innovative guitar designs, combining traditional elements with modern technology. Paul Reed Smith, who began his guitar-making journey after briefly attending St. Mary’s College of Maryland, was mentored by Ted McCarty, former president of Gibson and creator of iconic models like the Explorer and Flying V. This collaboration helped shape the early models of PRS Guitars, which debuted at the 1985 NAMM Show with the PRS Custom, featuring a mahogany neck, maple cap, and advanced electronics.
In the years following its founding, PRS experienced rapid growth, moving from its original facility to a larger space on Kent Island, Maryland, in 1996. The company soon became known for its high-quality craftsmanship and innovative features, such as custom rotary pickup switches and unique tuning systems. By 1996, PRS had expanded to 100 employees, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History even included the PRS Dragon 1 in its collection, solidifying its influence on American music. Today, PRS employs over 300 people and continues to be a leading name in guitar manufacturing.
