Famous Gibson Flying V Guitar Players

The Gibson Flying V, introduced in 1958, featured a radical “futuristic” design, alongside its siblings, the Explorer and the Moderne. Initially using korina wood, its avant-garde style led to a limited initial run of fewer than 100 units, resulting in poor sales. However, the unique design found favor with musicians like Albert King and Lonnie Mack, leading to renewed interest and subsequent reissues.

Gibson reintroduced the Flying V in 1967, updating it with a bigger pickguard and a new bridge. This model became the standard, although earlier designs were periodically reissued. Notable players included Jimi Hendrix, who had custom Flying Vs, and Marc Bolan of T. Rex, who owned a rare Walnut version.
