The Fender Jazzmaster, introduced in 1958, was designed as a high-end counterpart to the Stratocaster, initially targeting jazz musicians but later popularized by surf rockers. Its distinctive features include an offset-waist body, a 25.5-inch scale length, and unique controls with “lead” and “rhythm” circuits. The Jazzmaster’s wide “soapbar” pickups, tremolo system, and distinctive bridge contribute to its warmer, “jazzier” tone compared to other Fender models. Though it struggled with sales and was discontinued in 1980, it was reissued in various forms starting in 1986 and remains influential in rock and alternative music.
