The Tech 21 SansAmp is an all-analog amp-simulation and direct-recording pedal first introduced in 1989 by Tech 21 founder Andrew Barta. Later known as the SansAmp Classic, it was designed to emulate the sound and response of a tube amplifier, including preamp, power amp, and speaker-style coloration, without needing a physical amp or microphone. The pedal became important as an early direct-to-desk guitar and bass solution, using analog circuitry rather than digital modeling, with controls and internal character switches for shaping gain, EQ, speaker response, and amp-like voicing. Its success led to a wider SansAmp line, including bass DI units, rack preamps, Character Series pedals, and Fly Rig products.
