The Gibson RD is an Electric Guitar used by Dave Grohl.
The Gibson RD series, launched in 1977, aimed to merge traditional guitar design with active electronics, catering to the synthesizer market. The series featured longer scale lengths, with guitars at 25½” and basses at 34½”. Its models included the RD Artist, RD Custom, and RD Standard, with the Artist being the most notable due to its advanced active circuitry designed by Bob Moog.
Despite the innovative features, the series struggled commercially, as many guitarists found the sound too harsh. Production of the RD series ended in 1981, but some concepts were later incorporated into the Les Paul Artist model, which also failed to achieve success. The RD series is now considered collectible among enthusiasts.
