Gary was seen with this guitar on a couple of photos taken in the 80s. The first one is the often referenced photo of Gary’s guitar collection, and the second one shows Gary holding the guitar.
In the second photo, the guitar has a hand-written signature on it, so it could be that this photo was taken moments before Gary gave/sold the guitar to somebody.
Be that as it may, Gary’s Hamer was apparently a prototype made in 1984, based on the Hamer Phantom. However, for one reason or another, the guitar never made it to production. [The Hamer Special Through the Years by Andrew Large]
The prototype featured a Phantom-style body, with two single coils and a humbucker. The neck on it was also from the Phantom model, but styled Gibson-esque inlays, as opposed to dot inlay which was found on the standard models.
Commenting here since it’s about the same period of acquisition. 4 Very important guitars are missing from this collection.
Most of all his 1986 White Jackson HSS White Soloist with a aftermarket Floyd Rose system. Guitar was used in the “The Loner” music video and probably also used on the “Wild Frontier” record on that song in particular.
From that same era and album a red, a white and a blue PRS from Paul Reed Smith’s first few years of production (1985-1986). All 3 probably 24 Customs.
The white one is featured in multiple promotional picks as well as the music video for “Wild Frontier”, the red one is seen and multiple pics and vids from his studio and the blue one is featured in the video for “Over the Hills and Far Away”.
