Billie Joe Armstrong’s Marshall JCM900
The Marshall JCM900 entered Billie Joe’s setup around the time Green Day was pushing beyond the Gilman Street scene, but before they had access to the vintage Plexis. By 1992, he was seen with a JCM900 head on stage, most likely the 4100 Dual Reverb model. This amp, unlike the solid-state Gallien-Krueger, gave him the tube drive and stage presence that became necessary as the band started playing larger venues.
It’s possible that some of the Kerplunk material was tracked with the JCM900, although Armstrong himself hasn’t given a straight confirmation. During live gigs, the JCM900 is clearly in use, and the tone matches the move from the sharper solid-state sound of 39/Smooth.
Once Dookie came along, the JCM900 was pushed aside in favor of the Plexi. But in the early ’90s, it was an important stepping stone, a transitional amp that bridged the Gallien-Krueger sound with the classic Marshall 1959SLP sound that Armstrong would eventually be known for.
