Billie Joe Armstrong began using a Gallien-Krueger 250RL stereo amp head in Green Day’s early years. In interviews promoting the MXR Dookie Drive, he recalled that both 39/Smooth in 1990 and Kerplunk in 1991 were recorded with a Gallien-Krueger 250R. Armstrong used the amp both in the studio and on stage until 1993.
The first two records, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk, I used a Gallien Krueger head, which was bizarre. When we were recording Dookie, it was the first time we had a budget that allowed us to explore. The first two records were about $2,000 to make both of those records.
